I love watermelon anytime of the year but summer just makes it that much sweeter. Looking at the beautiful, glistening, red fruit makes you feel cooler and happy! It also served as cheap entertainment when we would see who could spit the seeds the farthest. In our family it's also known as yuckum. No it isn't one of our Mutsun tribal words, it's a word my parents first heard from my baby sister's vocabulary. While shopping at a local fruit stand one day my father asked my sister, "Baby what do you want?" She was around two and she responded, "Yuckum Daddy!" He had to take her around the many vegetables and fruit until they stood in front of a box of watermelons and she identified yuckum.
